Conservation areas
Lipowiec
A forest reserve with a surface area of 11.36 ha; it was set up in 1959. The reserve protects the area of Lipowiec Hill, which is built of Triassic formations and covered with Carpathian beech forest including an old growth stand. Numerous orchid species are a floristic curiosity of the reserve. One of them is Epipactis microphylla the small-leaved helleborine, which occurs at only five locations in Poland, and another is Cypripedium calceolus the lady's slipper, which has the most impressive flowers of all Polish orchids. The hill is topped with ruins of a late-thirteenth-century castle which belonged to Krakow bishops. The castle was a fortified mansion but was also used as an episcopal prison. Nowadays, the ruins are open to the public and their tower makes an excellent view point.
