Conservation areas
Stare Wi¶lisko
An area of special protection of wildlife value (a non-statutory form of wildlife conservation established by the resolution no. 3/23/02 of the O¶więcim Communal Council from 30th Dec. 2002). It covers a part of the right-bank Vistula Valley together with some of its cut-offs. The conservation area was set up to protect a mosaic of plant communities, ranging from aquatic and bulrush ones - typical for oxbow lakes - through thicket communities, to forest ones. A stretch of hornbeam-oak forest is particularly precious; its bottom is covered with masses of the protected common snowdrop Galanthus nivalis, which blooms in early spring, and with Veratrum lobelianum the white hellebore - a mountain plant of impressive size. Within the protected area there are also some semi-natural communities of fresh (i.e. not very humid) meadows, rich in rare plant species. Among protected plants which you may see in the area of Stare Wi¶lisko there are a few orchid species, the floating watermoss and Nuphar luteum the yellow water-lily. The area is also significant for protection of amphibians.
