The Ponds in Brzeszcze-Nazieleńce
The complex consists of several ponds with a total surface area of 200 ha, surrounded by forest and Vistulan meadows. The ponds are supplied with water from the Soła River, and the water from the basins is channelled off to the Vistula River, which flows within a distance of a few hundred metres to the north. More than 30 species of aquatic and wetland birds breed here, five of which are endangered and listed in the Polish Red Data Book of animals: the Great Bittern, the Little Bittern, the Little Crake, the Bluethroat and the Whiskered Tern.
In a small area around 300 vascular plants co-occur. They include aquatic, bulrush, meadow, forest and ruderal species. Common plants predominate among them, but rare species (around 20), as well as protected ones may be seen here, e.g. the floating watermoss, the yellow water-lily, Dactylorhiza majalis the broad-leaved marsh orchid, Asarum europaeum the European wild ginger, Hedera helix the common ivy, Rhamnus frangula, Frangula alnus the alder buckthorn and Viburnum opulus the Guelder rose.
