The forest in Jawiszowice
The forest situated to the east of Jawiszowice, from the point of view of a naturalist is everything and nothing - a typical industrial forest, having nothing in common with a natural one. However, when passing by, it is worth taking a look at its northern part (to the west of the forester's lodge), if only for its extraordinary scent and fairy-tale scenery. The stand in that part of the forest is dominated by impressive specimens of a foreign species - Pinus strobus the Eastern White Pine. The forest makes an uncanny impression as the tree has a bit different habit than the native Pinus sylvestris Scots Pine. The Eastern White Pine comes from North America. Its needles, growing on dwarf shoots in fasciles of five, are a characteristic feature of this species. Also its cones are different from the cones of the native pine - much bigger and longer.
The Eastern White Pine was brought to Europe because it is distinguished by large volume growth in a short time. It is also frost resistant, grows well in cities and is used to decorate parks. Together with Pseudotsuga the Douglas-fir, it is the most important foreign species of the Polish conifer forests. Nowadays it is not planted any more as it is getting destroyed by Cronatrium ribicola the white pine blister rust.
