Refuges of the European ecological network "Natura 2000"
The European Ecological Network Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is a consistent European Ecological Network binding in the area of the European Union. It includes:
Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) - created on the basis of the so called Habitats Directive for conservation of natural habitats, plant species habitats and animal refuges,
Special Protection Areas (SPAs) - created on the basis of the so called Birds Directive for conservation of bird refuges.
As far as it is possible, the areas situated between SACs and SPAs should be developed in a way enabling migration, expansion and genetic exchange of species.
The main aim of the Habitats Directive is promoting biodiversity in the EU countries. This should be obtained by preserving wild fauna and flora species and their habitats in a condition favouring conservation, taking account of economic, social and cultural requirements, as well as regional and local characteristics.
The main aim of the Birds Directive is conservation and preservation of bird populations at a level corresponding to ecological, scientific and cultural requirements.
In the Oświęcim Region there are also a few "Natura 2000 Sites" designated by naturalists. They include: "the Upper Vistula Valley", "the Brzeszcze Ponds", "the Lower Soła Valley" and "the Lower Skawa Valley".
