Interesting plant species
The bog bulrush Schoenoplectus mucronatus
It is another plant which occurs in the O¶więcim Region and is registered in the Polish Red Data Book of plants as threatened with extinction.
The bog bulrush looks like an inconspicuous, not very striking plant from the Sedge family. It is a perennial species, growing in clumps and reaching up to 100 cm in height. Characteristic features of the species are a pointed tri-ridged stalk, similar to a narrow dagger and yellow and green colour. On the stalk there is one inflorescence about 1 cm big, with spikelets arranged in a head. The plant usually inhabits muddy shores of water bodies and marshes. In the last century in Poland, the bog bulrush has been described at nine sites, and only three of them have survived up to now. One of these, the most abundant, is situated in Poręba Wielka, in the shallow waters of a fish farming pond.
