Interesting plant species
The ostrich fern Matteuccia struthiopteris
It is an impressive fern, growing up to 1.5 m tall. Its characteristic feature is forming two types of fronds: wide-stretching green ones - used for assimilation, and dark brown, fleshy, spore-bearing fronds. It is the shape of the fronds used for reproduction that has been associated with ostrich plumes, hence the species name. The ostrich fern is a protected plant and rather rare in the wild. However, it is popular among gardening enthusiasts. Its habitats are connected mainly with riparian forests and riverside thickets in submontane areas, lower mountainous locations and adjacent lowlands. The main threat to the ostrich fern is the destruction of habitats during river regulation. In the O¶więcim-Zator Region, there are a few natural sites of the ostrich fern in riparian forests by the Soła and Skawa rivers.
