Interesting animal species
The White Stork Ciconia Ciconia,
the Black Stork Ciconia nigra

The two Stork species, although closely related, inhabit different environments. The Black Stork lives at a distance from people and it breeds in forest complexes. It hasn"t succumbed to synanthropisation like its cousin, the White Stork. Protection zones are established around Black Stork nests, where forestry works are limited to ensure the peace of the nesting birds. Both species occur in the O¶więcim Region; the White Stork population amounting to several dozen pairs, and the Black Stork population of only a few pairs. Partners of both species pair up only in the breeding period; during the rest of the time they live separately. The pair-bonding factor is the nest, to which they come back individually. The Black Stork is very difficult to meet, although in the summer season, in drained ponds one may see migrating flocks of these birds amounting to several dozen individuals. Our storks use the same routes during their migration from Europe. They fly over Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and further up the Nile Valley to Central Africa and Southern Europe. They need four months to cover a distance of 8000 km, with a daily maximum up to 700 km.
